The Day I Realized My Child Is Watching How I Treat Myself
The Day I Realized My Child Is Watching How I Treat Myself
Parenting through modeling, not just instruction
👀 The Mirror I Didn’t Expect
One evening, I caught my daughter playing “doctor” with her toys.
She scolded a doll: “You’re late again, you never do things properly!”
It was my tone.
My words.
My self-criticism—echoed back through her play.
That day, I realized:
My child isn’t just listening to what I tell her.
She’s watching how I treat myself.
💡 Children Copy What We Model
We teach kindness, patience, respect.
But if our kids see us rushing, burning out, criticizing ourselves—they absorb that faster than any lecture.
If I say “Don’t worry” but live stressed, she learns worry.
If I say “Be confident” but constantly self-doubt, she learns doubt.
If I say “Be kind” but insult myself in the mirror, she learns cruelty.
🧠 Why This Matters
Kids don’t just inherit our genes.
They inherit our patterns.
The way we:
Handle failure
Rest or overwork
Talk about money
Talk about ourselves
These become their scripts for adulthood.
🌱 What I’m Practicing Now
1. Speaking Kindly—to Myself
If I make a mistake, I say: “It’s okay, I’m learning.” And I let her hear it.
2. Normalizing Rest
I no longer glorify exhaustion. If I nap, I call it strength, not laziness.
3. Celebrating Small Wins
Instead of brushing off achievements, I say, “I’m proud of this.”
4. Letting Her See My Healing
When I’m upset, I don’t hide it. I show how I calm down—deep breaths, journaling, prayer.
❤️ The Parenting Shift
Parenting isn’t just teaching kids how to treat the world.
It’s teaching them how to treat themselves—by watching us.
That day, my daughter wasn’t imitating her doll.
She was imitating me.
And that was the wake-up call I needed.
✅ What Next?
Next time you criticize yourself, pause.
Remember—little eyes may be learning that same script.
Model the kindness you want them to inherit.
