“Is It Really a Need? Or Just a New Normal?”

“Is It Really a Need? Or Just a New Normal?”

(Decoding lifestyle inflation and spending triggers)

🛒 “We need it, Baba.”

That’s what my daughter said while holding a giant soft toy at the mall.
It wasn’t a tantrum. It was a belief.
And honestly… I’ve said the same about things I didn’t really need.

A new phone.
A second coffee machine.
Subscription number 9 out of 12.

But that question stuck in my head—

> Is it really a need?

Or just a new normal I’ve become used to?

🎢 The Slow Creep of Lifestyle Inflation

You don’t wake up one day and decide to overspend.
It happens gradually.

You get a raise, and suddenly your coffee goes from ₹50 to ₹250.

A 2BHK feels small, even if it was fine last year.

Your kid’s birthday party needs a bouncy castle now—not just cake and samosas.

That’s not ambition.
That’s lifestyle inflation.
It disguises itself as “deserving more,” but quietly eats into your savings, peace, and freedom.

🔍 3 Self-Checks Before You Buy the Next ‘Need’

1. Is it solving a problem, or solving boredom?
A lot of our purchases are emotional pacifiers.

2. Would I still want it if no one knew I had it?
Strip away the social signalling. What remains?

3. Will this make life simpler—or more cluttered?
Convenience often creates dependency. Not ease.

💡 My Rule: Pause, Don’t Punish

I’m not against spending.

But I’ve learned to pause for clarity.
To check if this is joy—or just a habit.
To see if I’m chasing a feeling I can’t buy.

✅ What Next?

Our needs don’t always come from our bank accounts.
Sometimes, they come from our wounds, wants, or fears.
